Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has highlighted the effective work its machines are doing on the ‘Toshka Project’ in Egypt
The megaproject is a multi-phase project set to add 600,000 acres to the current agricultural patch of Egypt by redirecting water supply from the Nile for much-needed crop irrigation. A 50 km main transfer canal and four additional 18-26 km long side branches are currently being constructed and, when completed, will transport water from Lake Nasser to the Toshka Depression. The aim of this undertaking it to transform unused desert into agricultural land with the water supplied being used to fuel centre pivot irrigation systems. Ultimately, this will aid in the country’s efforts to lessen the necessity of wheat importation from other countries and secure more of Egypt’s needs by 2030.
A proven impact in Egypt
Around 30 contractors have been engaged to deliver the megaproject and, for carrying out their work, many have turned to the reliable machinery of Volvo CE, provided through GB Auto, Volvo CE’s dealer in Egypt since 1999. According to Volvo CE, many turned to its machinery following the formidable work its machines delivered on the Suez Canal expansion across 2014 and 2015.
“The Suez Canal Corridor Area Project required safe earthworks solutions across huge sites, and so we suggested the Volvo articulated hauler concept to our customers,” commented Amre Sheta, vice-president of construction equipment sales at GB Auto. “The results of the Suez Canal expansion project were able to be demonstrated to contractors for Toshka when it came to equipment selection and encouraged them to place their trust in us and Volvo as a solid success partner.”
Volvo CE machines at work
A range of Volvo CE excavators and articulated haulers are now hard at work on the Toshka project, dealing with intense environmental challenges such as the extreme temperatures, difficult terrain and remote location. The EC300D crawler excavator is one such piece of machinery, selected due to its ability to excel in tough conditions. According to Volvo CE, the machine’s engine boasts heightened horsepower and fuel efficiency, complemented by its electro-hydraulic system, ensuring superb control and faster cycle times.
For other operators, the EC480D crawler excavator is proving its worth through its enhanced digging forces, shorter cycle times and improved hydraulics while the Volvo A45G articulated hauler is provided its patented consistent productivity and reliability.
“Our Volvo CE customers involved in the Toshka Project need the highest uptime with the highest capacity of performance,” continued Sheta. “When you’re working in the middle of the desert, fuel and oil consumption, together with supply and availability of spare parts, become even more vital.”
Fortunately, Volvo CE offers robust Fuel Efficiency Guarantee for its excavators, articulated haulers and wheel loaders, offering money saving fuel-efficiency. The Volvo support is also being aided by the dedicated service centre opened by GB Auto in the urban area of Aswan, a two-hour drive from the Toshka site vicinity. From here, GB Auto can liaise with contractor to supply spare parts and technical support.
