Angola Accelerates Mining Permit Reforms to Boost Foreign Investment and Sector Transparency

Angola is moving to shorten the approval process for mining rights as part of a wider push to attract more foreign investment and improve transparency in its minerals sector. Minerals and Petroleum Minister Diamantino Azevedo called on the National Agency of Mineral Resources (ANRM) to cut bureaucracy, enhance inspections, and accelerate implementation of a digital mining registry. Although no current or target approval timelines were provided, Azevedo stressed that a faster, more efficient permitting system is crucial for supporting exploration and keeping Angola competitive internationally. ANRM chairman Jacinto Rocha said the agency plans to strengthen enforcement and support diversification as new mineral projects progress, including recent copper discoveries in Moxico and Cuando Cubango and lithium findings in Namibe. These changes come as Angola works to expand its non-oil mining industry and draw more international investment, with companies such as Glencore, Ivanhoe Mines, and Tyranna Resources already exploring in the country.
