Vermeer Introduces the D24 HDD to Revolutionize Urban Utility Installations

Vermeer is enhancing its horizontal directional drill (HDD) lineup with the launch of the D24 HDD, designed to meet the growing needs of utility professionals installing fiber, power cables, and water infrastructure in urban areas.

Amid surging demand for high-speed data access and the infrastructure to support it, utility contractors face challenges such as longer bore shots, difficult ground conditions, operator shortages, and tighter timelines. The D24 HDD addresses these pain points with its quieter operation, compact footprint, and advanced technologies that improve efficiency for both novice and experienced operators.

A Step Forward in HDD Technology

“The D24 represents a significant step forward in HDD technology,” said Clint Recker, Product Manager for Utility HDD Equipment at Vermeer. “We’ve listened closely to utility contractors and integrated their feedback into every aspect of this machine, delivering a drill that sets new standards for ease of operation and maintenance simplicity.”

Replacing the D23x30 S3 in Vermeer’s lineup, the 24,000-pound (110-kN) class D24 HDD is powered by a 100-hp (74.6-kW) Cat 3.6L Tier 4 Final/Stage V engine. It offers peak thrust and pullback of 24,700 pounds (110 kN), continuous thrust and pullback of 22,000 pounds (98 kN), 3,080 ft-lb (4,176 Nm) of rotational torque, and a 45-gpm (170-L/min) mud pump.

Automated Rod Exchange (ARE) for Efficiency

The D24 HDD introduces Vermeer’s automated rod exchange (ARE) system, which streamlines operations by automating the entire rod changeout sequence with a single button press, eliminating up to 19 manual steps.

ARE minimizes component wear, reduces the risk of human error, and extends the life of consumables like sub savers and drill rods. This feature is particularly beneficial for new operators while reducing the workload for experienced crew members.

Advanced Diagnostics and Troubleshooting

Operators benefit from an advanced onboard diagnostic system accessible via a touchscreen display, which provides comprehensive issue identification and step-by-step troubleshooting guidance.

For instance, if a hydraulic system issue arises, the diagnostics display pinpoints the problem, reducing downtime. When dealer support is required, the system ensures technicians arrive equipped with detailed information for quicker resolution.

Durability and Reliability

Built for long-term performance, the D24 incorporates premium hydraulic components typically found in larger pipeline equipment. These components protect the hydraulic system and enhance reliability, enabling the machine to perform consistently across challenging drilling conditions.

Optimized for Urban Applications

Vermeer has designed the D24 HDD with urban utility installations in mind. Its compact size ensures efficient operation in confined spaces while maintaining the power and precision needed for diverse soil conditions.

The D24 operates at just 88 dB(A) at the operator’s ear and has a guaranteed sound power level of 100 dB(A), minimizing disturbances in urban areas and enhancing on-site communication. These low noise levels contribute to a comfortable and productive work environment.

Streamlined Design Features

Operators can select between 400 or 480 feet (122 or 146 m) of 2.375-inch Firestick drill rod based on project needs. Its redesigned vise system features sliding open-side vises for easier cleaning and joint visibility, improving breakout efficiency and extending vise die life.

The D24’s stakedown system, with tiered shark teeth and 60-rpm rotation speed, accelerates setup in hard soils. With a carriage speed of 181 fpm (55 m/min) and a tracking speed of 3.3 mph (5.3 km/hr), crews can complete installations more efficiently while relocating quickly between job sites.

Setting a New Standard

“This drill represents the culmination of extensive research, development, and customer input,” Recker added. “We believe contractors will find the D24 HDD to be a game-changer in their operations, redefining expectations for HDD equipment.”

The D24’s simplified naming system reflects its 24,000-pound thrust capabilities, replacing the D23x30 S3 in Vermeer’s lineup.
