SKF South Africa welcomes Andres Vera as Managing Director to lead Southern Africa regional growth and advance SKF OneAfrica 2030 strategy

Newly appointed Managing Director of SKF South Africa, Andres Vera, shares his five-year vision for the company: “Africa is a key growth engine for SKF and it is my aim to position the company as the continent’s leading partner for intelligent and clean rotation, delivering measurable improvements in reliability, energy efficiency and sustainability across all industries we serve. This ambition aligns with SKF’s global strategic direction, which emphasizes customer‑centric innovation, regionalized value chains and a sharpened industrial focus, supported by targets of doubling our product and service sales by year 2030.”

“Even amid challenges such as logistics volatility, currency pressures and a need for specialized skills, Africa’s rapidly evolving industrial base is irrefutably driving demand for energy‑efficient technologies, reliability solutions and circular services, ultimately unlocking significant opportunities,” continues Andres. “Taking this forward, we intend to achieve our growth ambitions by expanding our digital monitoring, lubrication management and remanufacturing offerings. These efforts support both operational performance and customers’ environmental, social and governance priorities. Service‑led growth, sustainability‑driven value, advanced reliability technologies and regional supply flexibility all position SKF South Africa to play a defining role in the continent’s next phase of industrial development.”

Born in Peru and a mechanical engineer by profession, Andres is driven by a life-long passion for mechanics and machinery. He is also a distinguished scholar, holding an MBA, a Master of Philosophy Degree as well as a Doctorate in Business and Strategy.

Andres kicked off his career journey at SKF when he joined SKF Peru’s Trainee Program during his final university semester. The program gave him a well‑rounded foundation, taking him through rotations in the warehouse, customer service and service contracts, equipping him with practical insight into every corner of the business. “It was during this time that I truly fell in love with SKF, not only because of our products and services, but also because of the company’s philosophy around sustainability and its strong values,” notes a passionate Andres. “After completing my studies, I was offered a position as a Sales Representative in the automotive division where I progressed through several sales and operations roles.”

Andres transitioned into the industrial division where he served as Sales Coordinator, Distributor Development Manager, Six Sigma Black Belt and ultimately Sales Manager for Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay. He further broadened his professional expertise and built cross-cultural business experience while working in Chile and Colombia.

Andres stepped away from SKF to pursue new opportunities, taking up leadership roles at a U.S.-based mining services company, first as Sales Director for the Northern LATAM (Latin American) region and subsequently as Operations Director for Drilling Services in the Southern LATAM region. He returned to SKF as Managing Director for the Andean Region after which Andres was appointed Country Manager for Argentina. He concluded a three-year tenure as Factory Manager for SKF’s largest seals manufacturing facility, located in Guadalajara, Mexico, before assuming the position of Managing Director of SKF South Africa on 2 February 2026.

Drawing on the depth of his career experience across LATAM, Andres brings immeasurable value to the local industrial landscape. His five-year vision for SKF South Africa is centered on three strategic priorities – expanding service excellence and intelligent solutions, accelerating circular and sustainable solutions and strengthening regionalization and supply resilience.

Andres underscores SKF’s Rotating Equipment Performance (REP) model and remote diagnostic capabilities as a prime example of the first strategic priority – expanding service excellence and intelligent solutions. “Through predictive maintenance tools, we help customers minimize downtime and lower operational costs. The REP Centre, located at our head office in Jet Park, Johannesburg, and one of SKF’s global hubs, already monitors more than 25,000 bearings, underscoring Africa’s readiness for advanced reliability technologies.”

Turning to the second priority that focuses on accelerating circular and sustainable solutions, Andres shares SKF’s commitment to decarbonizing its operations globally by 2030 and to achieving a net‑zero supply chain by 2050, a roadmap mirrored in its African operations. “At the Circular Economy Centre in Jet Park, remanufacturing services deliver significant customer value, including up to 50% cost savings and greatly reduced lead times in sectors such as mining and cement. These efforts not only lower operational costs but also reduce energy use and carbon emissions, bringing the circular economy to life in practical, measurable ways.”

To strengthen regionalization and supply resilience, the third priority, Andres explains that SKF is shifting toward a decentralized and regionally optimized operating model in a bid to reduce lead times and improve availability for African customers. “Here our widely extended distributor network plays a pivotal role in access to products, services and technical support for our customers.”

“People remain central to our strategy and SKF will continue to invest in accredited training programs, apprenticeships and skills development across vibration analysis, precision alignment, lubrication engineering and condition monitoring,” asserts Andres. “I am proud to share that we reached level 2 B-BBEE contributor as proof of our commitment to developing local talent.”

Andres wraps up: “I’m grateful that my career has given me the opportunity to live abroad for professional reasons. As I step into this new chapter, I am truly excited to join the SKF South Africa team. I look forward to learning from our people, immersing myself in the rich culture and unique business environment of this country, and building strong relationships across our organization and with our partners. Most importantly, I am committed to contributing to SKF’s OneAfrica ambitions and to supporting South Africa’s continued industrial development. Together, I believe we can drive meaningful, sustainable impact for our customers, our communities, and the future of African industry.”
